Troubleshooting mysterious noises from your HVAC unit can sometimes be a daunting task. It is not uncommon for HVAC units to make some racket, but how do you know what noises are normal and when those sounds mean trouble?
Some of the most common noises from your HVAC will come when there is a change in the outside temperature, especially when it starts getting colder. Valves allow the HVAC unit to switch back and forth between heating and cooling. You can sometimes hear the valves as they switch between the two.
In the winter, there is a defrost mode that keeps the unit from freezing. This can also make strange noises when it kicks on.
Other sounds can come from the unit itself, even when it is not running. Some units produce a loud buzzing noise which, in most cases, comes from the coils and is perfectly normal.
So HVAC systems make noise. The buzzing, the whirring, and the loud ‘washing machine’ sounds are typically just fine. But what can you do to be sure these sounds are not a sign of damage to your system?
• Be observant. Look at the exterior of your unit for anything out of place or damaged.
• Look for any obstructions that might be causing an unnatural noise
• If you see anything out of the ordinary or an obstruction in your unit, shut it off immediately.
• If you ever have any concerns about noises coming from your HVAC unit, be sure to call your local experts.
