Is It a Cause for Concern If My HVAC Unit Begins to Rattle?
When it comes to HVAC safety and prevention, a quietly running unit is always going to be the safest. So when you begin hearing rattling/thumping/clanging/screeching sounds coming from your air conditioner, you’ve got a problem on your hands.
What Those Odd HVAC Sounds Mean
Here’s a quick overview of the types of sounds, and the usual problems associated with each:
Screeching: Often associated with a bad belt or ball-bearing problems inside the motor. Depending on the extent of the problem, you may require simple lubrication, or full replacement.
Rattling, Clanging & Banging: Something is in the process of coming loose inside your machine. The noise is also a symptom of much worse things to come; once the piece breaks loose, it can wreak complete havoc on the inside of your machine.
Whapping or Ticking: Any sound that reminds you of a stick in a bicycle spoke is usually related to debris stuck in your blower blades, or parts otherwise hanging down and interfering with the fan’s rotation. While not critical, the constant impairment can cause the fan to wear out more quickly that I would otherwise.
Clicking: While occasionally irritating, the clicking noise you’re hearing is related to the HVAC units turning on and off. If the sound seems excessive, or continuous, you might have a problem with the relay or electrical controls.
