How Can I Save on My Energy Bill?

Energy costs on utility bills

As cooler temperatures gradually give way to warm summer breezes, many of our Florence neighbors are looking forward to outdoor summer activities. What most of us are dreading are the high utility bills that come with all the bright sunshine and longer days.

Did you know that almost half of the average home utility bill comes from heating and cooling indoor spaces? Only three percent of US homes either don’t use or don’t have heating appliances.

This year celebrate the arrival of the summer solstice with lower energy bills – and more money in your pocket for vacations and warm-weather outings – with these five energy savings tips from Jerry’s Air Conditioning and Heating.

Schedule an Annual Inspection and Tune Up

Your HVAC units work hard during winter months. Make sure your system is ready for the challenges that hot, humid Carolina weather brings. By replacing filters and thoroughly cleaning your system, you’ll relieve stress on the unit and increase energy-efficiency.

Automate Temperature Control

Install an HVAC programmable thermostat that automatically lowers the temperature (or increases it during summer months) when the family will be gone for an extended period of time – like during work or school hours.

Examine Windows and Doors for Damage and Leaks

Air and moisture leaks around windows and doors suck conditioned air out of your home. If your home doesn’t have double-pane ENERGY STAR certified windows, you may benefit from installing replacement windows throughout your home. Updating windows and patio doors can save you as much as 25 percent on your monthly utility bills. Not ready to upgrade this season? You can still save by:

  1. Replacing damaged weather-stripping and draft guards.
  2. Repairing or replacing broken panes.
  3. Inspecting sills, frames and trim for damage from rot, mold, mildew or other environmental damage; then correct issues you find.

Inspect Ductwork and Water Pipes

Examine ductwork and water pipes that travel through unheated spaces like the attic or crawl spaces. Adding insulation improves energy-efficiency.

Add Water Heater Accessories

Older water heaters with fiberglass insulation use more energy to maintain a constant temperature. You can reduce energy loss by installing a water heater blanket.

There are myriad ways to curb your energy use. Our team of professional technicians is here to help you keep your system healthy. We offer a variety of routine maintenance plans. Give us a call at 843-665-7470 to learn more about Jerry’s HVAC Service Club. We look forward to meeting you.
