How Can I Find Out If My AC Is Running Efficiently or Not?

Thermostat Programming

The hottest days of summer are here, and we know that the energy efficiency of your air conditioner is a priority during this time of year.

There are few telltale signs that your air conditioner is not running at its very best. If your AC unit is leaking, making loud or unusual sounds, or struggling to keep your house cool, you can know for sure it is time for a tune up.

How do you know if your AC unit is running efficiently or not when there are no obvious symptoms? Finding it out is as simple as using two thermometers to check the air differential in the ducts of your system. Follow these simple steps:

  1. To perform this test, you will first need to set your air conditioner on a temperature that is quite a bit lower than the normal temperature in your home.
  2. Next, after you have given the air conditioner ten minutes to cool the house down, place a thermometer in an air duct blowing air.
  3. Then, place the second thermometer in the return air duct.
  4. Subtract the temperature of the first thermometer from the temperature of the second. The difference between the two should be somewhere between 15 and 18 degrees Fahrenheit.
  5. If the difference is less than 15 degrees, your air conditioner is low on refrigerant and running poorly.
  6. If the difference is greater than 18 degrees, your air filter may be clogged.

Keeping your AC unit running at its very best requires regular preventative maintenance. If the thermometer test reveals your air conditioner needs a tune up, call 843.655.7470 or click here to speak with our certified and experienced technicians about the energy efficiency of your unit.
